Bang, Bang, You’re Dead (digitally)

I walk a fine line when it comes to playing games.  Either I’m completely obsessed with them or I’m fine without them.  It’s hard for me to find a middle ground.  I’m hardcore or distant, the word casual doesn’t exist in my gaming vocabulary.

Playground Games

This post is a response (in sorts) to a little video posted by Barrett Garese (@syptap).  He has since written a followup article and David Nett has also chimed in on the discussion.  Taryn O’Neill had also posted her own thoughts about the state of web video content creation here.  Please watch the above mentioned video first. UPDATE: Zadi Diaz has added her thoughts here. (I’m sure there will be more to add too).  UPDATE: A TubeFilter article and a blog post by Ben Brusell and a great podcast called New Mediacracy did an episode called “Episode 18: The One About “IndieTV” Versus “Immersive Entertainment”

The Frugality of Time

If you know me, then you know that work has been less than stellar for me this year.

I wish I had more (paying) work, in the entertainment industry or other work. But nonetheless I’ve come to learn to appreciate the changes these things have necessitated. Most notable the usage of time.

boob-tube circa fall 2010

I like tv.  I do.  I really enjoy smart tv.  Arrested Development is probably the smartest and one of the funniest shows ever created.  I say one of, because The Simpsons holds a special place as the funniest tv show ever.  It’s almost surreal to think that I can consciously remember seeing it on tv during the Tracey Ullman show and then finally as it’s own show.  And it’s STILL running.

Fall is almost upon us, so let me take you through a few shows that I’ll be returning to and/or am excited for.

square blocks, round holes

Spent some time in thought and these John Mayer lyrics kept creeping to the front of my lobe.

Something’s missing / And I don’t know how to fix it / Something’s missing / And I don’t know what it is / At all

Inception, New York

Inception by far has been the best film I’ve seen so far this year. I very strongly suggest you see it before reading on further. As this post will draw from themes and ideas from the movie. I will try and stay as spoiler free but for the most part you will have to have seen both movies that I talk about during this post, Inception and Synecdoche, New York.

Reflections About Before

There are points in life where you meet forks in the road and those choices always mean you move one step further away from a past life. Sure sometimes you make conscious efforts to stay connected to the past for one reason or another but often times there are things that slip away. Thoughts and events that linger as faint memories.

I was on twitter this evening and had opened a time for “questions” from people. And one question struck a chord in me. Bringing me back to a part of my life that has slipped away but still lingers heavily in my mind.

Tethered

I’ll be the firs to admit, I like the internet.  I don’t know if I’d go as far as saying I’m “addicted” to it, but let’s just say we’re more than just friends.

Many days I cannot imagine life with out the internet.  It has shaped the way we work, play, live on so many more levels past “You’ve got mail.”

And then there’s my iPhone.  Obviously the iPhone has internet on it.  Yet what it has lacked is the ability to share that internet connection with a laptop or other mobile devices, this is called tethering.

Tethering has been the holy grail for (most)* iPhone users.  Until now…

The Old Fashioned

It all started because of the show Mad Men.  If you haven’t seen the show it’s a drama set in the 60′s about very flawed people who work on Madison Avenue in an ad agency.  I like it a lot.  But that’s not what this post is about.

This post is about a drink that has largely been forgotten.  It was popular back in the setting of Mad Men, but has gone the way of things like smoking on airplanes and fedoras.

It’s the Old Fashioned.

To Be or Not To Be

Many of you know I’m involved in the web video world, mostly from the perspective of behind the camera side. I’ve been doing PA (production assistant) work, been a 2nd assistant director (AD), and a 1st AD as well, in addition to editing and some writing and some producing.  All of these have been great learning experiences and I have really enjoyed them.  In addition to all the things listed, there is one more thing I enjoy doing, and even some of my web friends don’t know about this:

I want to act.

You can find my headshots/resume/reel here.
