I’m Not the President but I Play One on TV

or How to Taft Hartley Yourself

I’ve been sitting on this post for a while.  It actually came from a few articles that I saw tweeted a while back.

As someone who works in new media and is at best someone who likes to act but isn’t actively pursuing it, the who idea of getting into SAG or AFTRA is one of those things you hear talked about but you never really fully know what it’s all about.

If you don’t know SAG is the Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA is American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the two main governing unions for actors.

For the full rundown read these two articles here and here.

This post is a response (in sorts) to a little video posted by Barrett Garese (@syptap).  He has since written a followup article and David Nett has also chimed in on the discussion.  Taryn O’Neill had also posted her own thoughts about the state of web video content creation here.  Please watch the above mentioned video first. UPDATE: Zadi Diaz has added her thoughts here. (I’m sure there will be more to add too).  UPDATE: A TubeFilter article and a blog post by Ben Brusell and a great podcast called New Mediacracy did an episode called “Episode 18: The One About “IndieTV” Versus “Immersive Entertainment”

Gus Russelman: Professional Gamer – Trailer

If you remember back in March I blogged about my webseries that I was working on.  Well I’m still working on it, but I do have a brand new trailer for the pilot episode that we just released today.  Click on through to see it.

To Be or Not To Be

Many of you know I’m involved in the web video world, mostly from the perspective of behind the camera side. I’ve been doing PA (production assistant) work, been a 2nd assistant director (AD), and a 1st AD as well, in addition to editing and some writing and some producing.  All of these have been great learning experiences and I have really enjoyed them.  In addition to all the things listed, there is one more thing I enjoy doing, and even some of my web friends don’t know about this:

I want to act.

You can find my headshots/resume/reel here.

If the shoe doesn’t fit…

PREFACE:

I have a huge deal of respect for Tubefilter and the IAWTV, each and everyone who was nominated for awards and even those who didn’t get nominated at last night’s Streamy Awards. I myself, feel that for better or worse (for my bank acct) I can proudly say I make a living off of being a part of the web video community.

———-

There already has been much discussion about everything that happened at last night’s Streamy awards, I’ll just assume you’ve read an article or two about the show itself.  I am almost hesitant to write anything at all, but I most of all want to be a contributing member of the community, and I feel to stay silent would not be the appropriate course of action.

Gus Russelman: Professional Gamer

As many of you know I’ve been working in the entertainment industry as of late, mainly in the area of webseries/webtv.  Aside from my show Melts In Your Pocket I decided I wanted to contribute to the over all community that I am a part of.

I can talk the talk and have loved getting to know so many other talented people who have created/produced series.  People I look up to and admire.  Now it’s time to walk the walk.  Can I produce something that is on par of what my peers are doing and gather an audience that likes my work?

Robots In Love

I am always a fan of great cinema.  I might go as far as saying I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to movies.

That being said, there are times when something so simple, can be so intricate at the same time.

One of my all time favorite directors, some may say, visionary, is Spike Jonze.  Having come from the humble beginnings of the music video world, he never ceases to amaze me with his ability to think so far outside the box, you end up waning to live inside of his box, because it just feels so right.  His latest project can be found at imheremovie.com

fingers + keys

I’ve been thinking a lot about the writing process…

Let me back up a bit.  If you are unaware I am involved with a number of webseries and web video content creation.  This has led to me to try my hand at what more or less can be called screenwriting.  The only problem is that I hate re-doing work.

Ever since I can remember I have been a one draft pony.  I consider myself fairly smart and able to think well on my feet.  Therefore I usualy over look the need to make sure what I have said is clear and well thought through.  Most of the time it is just a battle to get the words out of my head and onto paper or keys before I forget what I was going to say.  To stop and review what I have said would almost make me lose track of where I was going next with my thoughts. …hold the phone, there's more
